ARROYO PROCLAIMS NOVEMBER LUNG CANCER
AWARENESS MONTH
SPRINGFIELD - State Rep. Luis Arroyo (D-Chicago) announced Thursday that more Illinoisans will be educated about lung cancer during the month of November in Illinois due to his work to proclaim it as Lung Cancer Awareness Month.
“Lung cancer is prevalent in our society and I want to ensure that people are educated on the lesser causes that can increase the risk of lung cancer,” Arroyo said.
Senate Joint Resolution 30, which was sponsored by Sen. William Delgado (D-Chicago) in the Senate, designates November of each year as Lung Cancer Awareness Month. According to the Illinois Department of Public Health, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in both men and women in Illinois and the United States. More Americans die from lung cancer than from breast, prostate and colorectal cancer combined.
There are an estimated 173,000 new cases of lung cancer and an estimated 428 deaths from lung cancer each day in the U.S, with 7,290 new cases of lung cancer and 6,790 deaths this year in Illinois. Although smoking is the number one cause of lung cancer, there are many other lesser known causes that can increase the risk of lung cancer. Establishing November as Lung Cancer Awareness Month is in conjunction with a state-by-state national movement through the Lung Cancer Alliance.
“This legislation originated after a constituent with stage four lung cancer contacted my office advocating for lung cancer awareness,” Arroyo said. “Her dedication and passion inspired me to get involved in the fight against lung cancer.”
